Biodegradable confetti vs real petals, which one should you choose?

Confetti shots are one of my favourite bits of any wedding day, but I get asked a lot which kind of confetti couples should actually go for. So here's my honest answer, biodegradable confetti, every time, if your venue allows it.

I get why real petals feel special, they really can be. I recently shot a wedding where the bride's sister had grown the flowers herself and picked every single petal off by hand just to make their confetti. That kind of thing is genuinely beautiful, and the meaning behind it is hard to beat.

But here's the bit nobody tells you, petals don't photograph the same as biodegradable confetti. I love a thick, heavy confetti shot, the kind where the air is completely full and you can barely see the couple through it. Petals just don't do that unless you've got an absolutely enormous amount of them, they're flatter and heavier, so they don't float and hang in the air the way proper biodegradable confetti does. Use a normal amount of petals and your shot can end up looking a bit thin on camera, when what you actually wanted was that big, dramatic moment.

So if your venue is happy for you to use biodegradable confetti, that's what I'll always point you towards, it gives you that proper full, floaty shot every time. If petals are the only option, or they mean something personal to you, that's completely fine too, just know what to expect from the photos and maybe ask your guests to go a bit heavier with it than you'd think.
